Working Memory in the Classroom

Working memory is the essential mental space that holds and reorganizes information moment by moment. Students rely on it constantly: combining ideas, solving problems, writing sentences, following directions, and applying new learning. When working memory becomes overloaded, students lose track of steps, misunderstand concepts, make avoidable mistakes, or struggle to show what they know.

In this workshop, teachers learn practical ways to anticipate, recognize, and respond to working memory overload in everyday classrooms. We’ll connect cognitive science research to concrete instructional decisions: how to design tasks, introduce new combinations of ideas, structure routines, give directions, and use visuals and examples effectively.

Throughout the session, participants apply these ideas to real classroom materials and lessons. The focus remains practical and realistic: not lowering expectations, but helping students manage cognitive demands more successfully. Teachers leave with classroom-ready strategies that support working memory, executive function, and deeper learning across grade levels.
